Before you can hit the road for your practical driving test, you must first pass the driving theory test. It’s a crucial milestone for any learner driver in the UK, designed to ensure you understand the rules of the road, road signs, and essential driving safety practices.
If you’re getting ready to take this important step, here’s everything you need to know about how to book your driving theory test.
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
To book your theory test in the UK, you must:
-
Be at least 17 years old (or 16 if you’re applying for a moped licence).
-
Hold a valid UK provisional driving licence.
If you don’t yet have a provisional licence, you’ll need to apply for one through the GOV.UK website.
Step 2: Prepare for the Theory Test
The theory test has two parts:
-
Multiple-choice questions – Based on The Highway Code, traffic signs, and essential driving knowledge.
-
Hazard perception test – A video-based test where you identify developing hazards on the road.
We recommend:
-
Studying The Highway Code.
-
Using the official DVSA theory test app or books.
-
Practising with mock tests regularly.
At Shah Driving School, our instructors can also offer tips and resources to help you confidently prepare.
Step 3: Book Your Theory Test Online
To book your theory test, go to the official booking page: https://www.gov.uk/book-theory-test
You’ll need:
-
Your UK provisional driving licence number.
-
A debit or credit card to pay the fee (currently £23 for cars and motorbikes).
-
The postcode of your preferred test centre.
Once booked, you’ll receive an email confirmation with your test’s time, date, and location.
⚠️ Avoid unofficial websites that charge extra fees. Always book through the official GOV.UK website.
Step 4: What to Bring on the Test Day
On the day of your test, make sure you bring:
-
Your UK photocard provisional driving licence.
If you only have a paper licence (issued before 1998), you’ll also need to bring a valid passport.
If you forget your documents, you won’t be allowed to take the test, and you won’t get a refund.
Step 5: After the Test
-
If you pass, you’ll receive a pass certificate, which you’ll need to book your practical driving test.
-
If you fail, you can rebook after 3 working days.
Don’t worry if you don’t pass the first time—many learners need a couple of attempts. Use the feedback from your results to improve and try again!
